Educating Esme Lit Circle The book, Educating Esme, is written in the form of a journal in the perspective of a fifth grade teacher. In her journal, Esme talks about both her life as a teacher teaching her students and as a teacher breaking a part the educational system. The book allows the reader to see how she works to engage her students in order for them to gain the most out of their fifth grade year. It also shows how Esme is constantly battling her boss, Mr. Turner, by doing what she thinks is going to make a positive effect on her students, no matter the consequence.
One of my favorite parts, so far, is when Esme sets up a meet and greet with the author of the American Girl Doll, Addy. She put so much time and effort into making the event fun for all the students. The best parts in this section, for me, was when she jumped up on stage to give a boy, who rightfully won, an Addy doll when Mr. Turner wasn’t going to give it to him because he was a boy. In Mr. Turner’s mind boys shouldn’t have dolls, but in Esme’s mind the boy did all the work and deserved the doll just as much as any girl did. I thought that this showed strong character in Esme. I thought that it showed her protective and nurturing side because she defended the boy from Mr. Turner’s crooked ideology.
So far I really like the book. I think that it is written in way that is easy to read, but still able to reach multiple audiences. I also like that the main character, Esme, is super sassy and really witty when she handles difficult events in her teaching career.
